What is involved in a career in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology?: HVAC technicians and other Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology professionals hold important positions in our economy, but they're never as important as on those very cold or very hot days when the heating and cooling systems we usually take for granted start acting up or stop working altogether. HVAC professionals or HVACR (Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Refrigeration) technicians are proficient at installation (including ducting, venting, wiring, fuel and water lines) and/or maintenance of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems (most choose an area of specialty but receive at least rudimentary to intermediate training in both). They may specialize even further, such as in one type of system--hyrdonics or residential heating and cooling, for example.

Overall, they should have an intimate and demonstrable understanding of climate control systems and how they manage temperature, air quality, and humidity in a variety of industrial, commercial, and residential environments. While individual technicians may choose a specialty, they are trained to work on a variety of different systems, including oil, natural gas, electric, and multi-fuel/solid-fuel heating systems.

What qualifications are required for an HVAC/HVACR Techician or Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration professional?: While not required, the increasing complexity of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems has imbued a greater importance on a degree, diploma, or certificate from an accredited school or college. Additionally, individuals must pass competency exams based on their level of experience and position within the field, as well as their area of expertise.

What is the job outlook for HVACR professionals?: The job climate for HVACR professionals is excellent and promises to continue growing, and especially for those with particular expertise in air conditioning as the population growth in the American Southwest continues apace. According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates, overall growth in HVACR positions is expected to be between 18-26% through 2014.
